The Municipal Association of South Carolina recently released an article detailing South Carolina'a cities and towns that are implementing environmentally friendly ideas. The City of Seneca made the list with its upgrades to its water treatment plant, which has made the water the cleanest its ever been. Seneca was also mentioned because of it is the owner of the first entirely electric bus fleet.Seneca's water treatment plant now uses a sodium hydrochloride process to purify water instead of using dangerous chlorine gas. The plant also had a face life, replacing the industrial looking building with a beautiful new administrative building.Click Here to Read the Article

Student Faces smiling at Seneca City HallStudent faces are now smiling in downtown Seneca. Across the street from both City Hall on N.E. 1st Street and from Norton-Thompson Park on Main Street, Seneca High School students have decorated the former Kimbrell’s store front. Now instead of seeing furniture, you can see students’ artwork. “These are Face Motif Design works my students created for the windows of the empty Kimbrell’s building,” said Seneca High School Art Teacher Fred Edgerton. “The faces are those of my students here at Seneca High School,” added Edgerton. The downtown art project was sponsored by the Blue Ridge Arts Center (BRAC).“Our mission is bringing art to the people and people to the arts. To that end, we make it our goal to bring art into the local community whenever we can,” said Suzette Cross, President of the Board for BRAC.Students made drawings on paper, using marker. The students used a variety of color and design strategies to create interesting compositions.“Each design is unique and most of the designs were created by small teams or groups of students,” added Edgerton. ”A few were done by one student, individually. This is a project we do each year in class. We use photos of the students’ faces, then turn them into this motif design unit and they learn about color and use the color theory in a finished composition,” continued Edgerton. In 2015, the School District of Oconee County selected Edgerton as the District’s Teacher of the Year. He has taught art for over 30 years at Seneca High School. Edgerton holds degrees from both the University of South Carolina and Clemson University.“Fred's students provided art for the windows about four years ago, and they were looking old and nasty, so, I contacted him to see if his students would do something again,” said Cross. “I'm so glad he said yes, and I love what the students have done. I hope they feel proud when they drive by and see their faces in the window. It also is something that people driving downtown through Seneca or coming to City Hall can enjoy,” added Cross.

Steven R. Fletcher has been the head operator, lab director and plant supervisor at the Seneca Water Treatment plant for 24 of his 29 years as an employee. He has overseen and supervised plant operations over three (3) major upgrades at the facility within the past twelve (12) Years. Two of these upgrades involved converting the traditional sedimentation basins to a DAF process which was the first of its kind in the United States. The third and most recent upgrade involved converting the chlorine gas disinfection system to a sodium hypochlorite system, an overhaul of the plant’s sludge handling system, a new lab, control room and operations facility as well as a public conference/meeting area. This latest project was recognized last year as the Municipal Association of SC Achievement Award for Public Works. Throughout, these upgrades, under Steve’s leadership, the water plant continued operations without interruption and maintained the water system’s long string (15) of EPA Area Wide Optimization Program Award. In addition, the American Dental Association has recognized Seneca Light and Water as one of only two utilities in SC to receive their prestigious award for 50 years of consistent fluoride control. For this consistent and outstanding service to the City of Seneca and Seneca Light and Water, the Director of Utilities nominated him for this award. Tonight, we present the WEA Blue Ridge District Water Operator of the Year award to Steven R. Fletcher, head operator and supervisor of the Seneca Water Treatment Plant.

Council honors Blue Ridge Bank for Property Donation

The City of Seneca thanks Blue Ridge Bank for its recent donation of property at 416 East Main Street. At a special called meeting on Dec. 2, 2016, the Seneca City Council accepted the gift of a building and property in foreclosure from the bank, which will allow the city to grow its real estate holdings. To further show its grattitude, at their regular monthly meeting in January, the City Council presented Kyle Thomas, President and Chief Executive Officer of Blue Ridge Bank, with a plaque thanking the bank for their support as Seneca grows. “Blue Ridge Bank has been proud to serve Oconee County since 1957,” said Thomas. “We took possession of this building in downtown Seneca, which we listed for sale. When we heard the City of Seneca was interested in the building for an additional Police Office, our bank discussed the possibility of donating this property to The City of Seneca,” continued Thomas. The donation will allow the city to install training rooms and additional office space for the Seneca Police Department. In addition, it will enable police to have a continuing presence in the downtown area. “The Seneca Police Department needs more space for investigators and different departments,” added Alexander. “This will also put a police presence in the downtown area, even more, especially on Main Street,” continued Alexander. “As Oconee County’s community bank, we need to support the communities and organizations who support us,” said Thomas. “By adding an additional Police Office building in downtown Seneca, the city will be a safer place to work, shop, and dine. After careful consideration, we knew this donation was the right thing to do. It was our pleasure to assist The City of Seneca by making this donation,” concluded Thomas. The bank’s donation of the red-colored building, connected by a parking lot to the former Hometown Food Store building and property recently purchased by the city, further enhances the city’s downtown revitalization project. “Blue Ridge Bank’s donation to the city comes as part of our downtown revitalization project,” said Mayor Alexander. “I appreciate the bank for wanting to be a part of making Seneca what it is now and what it will be in the future. It is just a great opportunity for us to partner with someone and be able to see some good things come,” concluded Alexander.

PRESS RELEASE - Seneca All Electric CatBus

Seneca ready to test electric buses in passenger serviceSeneca, SC – August 2014 – The City of Seneca and Clemson Area Transit (CAT) are ready to begin the final deployment phase of the four Proterra electric buses: passenger service. Funded by a Federal Transit Agency grant awarded in 2011, the buses were recently delivered to Seneca for planned testing and deployment procedures. Starting September 3, Seneca will place the electric buses into passenger service, allowing the public to try out the new buses for the first time. This final phase of deployment is to ensure that the electric buses can meet the demands of passenger service. The only change in service, other than reduced bus noise and emissions, is the relocation of the downtown stop to the lower level of the park where the new fast charger has been installed. “CATbus is committed to delivering high quality transit service to our community with reliable and safe buses,” says Al Babinicz, CEO of Clemson Area Transit. “The electric buses represent the most advanced technology in the transit industry. We are excited about the opportunity to operate the only all-electric bus system in the nation operating electric buses made in South Carolina. What we are seeing today is part of an extensive and planned testing protocol to ensure that these buses can effectively operate within our CATbus service area. Enjoy the Slide Show of the Concerts on Thursday Nights! Pictures by: Jim Bandy In mid-July, CAT drivers completed a refresher-training course on the electric buses, after which the buses began a series of scheduled field tests. Proterra has also completed a number of upgrades and tests related to the advanced fast charging stations, located downtown and at Oconee Medical Center. “With any new technology, it is essential to conduct extensive testing and some of that testing must take place on location,” said Steve Clermont, a program manager with the Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE), who are assisting Seneca with their electric bus deployment project. “We have a plan to fully test all operational aspects of the electric bus. As we progress through testing, the project team, including CAT and Proterra, evaluate the results and make recommendations on next steps.”Seneca City Administrator Greg Dietterick is optimistic. “The City has been providing transit for seven years now. As an electric service provider and partner in innovation, we look forward to seeing electric buses that run cleaner and more efficiently on domestic power. This is a unique opportunity for Seneca and we sincerely appreciate Proterra’s efforts at making this a success. They have been a tremendous partner throughout this process.”Ryan Popple, Chief Executive Officer of Proterra added, “This project is an important element of our strategy for innovation. By deploying our Electric Vehicles with a local fleet, we can benefit from their operating experience first-hand. Further, these new routes are the first test of our technology in a small city environment. The mix of rural, suburban, campus and urban miles demonstrate that clean, quiet, efficient electric vehicles are ready to serve the broader transit market. We hope that other cities and fleet operators can benefit from the experience gained by CAT, CTE and the City of Seneca in EV transit technology.” About City of Seneca, SC Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Seneca has transitioned from a rural rail crossroads to a mill town and into a tourist and retirement destination. The city has embraced opportunities for innovation while working to maintain its natural and cultural quality of life.
